A DELICATE DANCE

Katelyn Rutt • Apr 30, 2024

Anne Neilson Fine Art celebrates its five-year partnership with Trudi Norris for a premier solo exhibition, “Intricately Intertwined”—a symphony of energy, intuition, and soul-enticing color.

Trudi Norris, a self-taught artist, is known for channeling her passion for intuitive, exploratory, and abstract art onto the canvas; but it's her ability to infuse her craft with captivating energy that truly sets her apart. Beyond mere paintings or displays, Norris intricately weaves a compelling narrative into every brushstroke. Her premier solo exhibition at Charlotte's esteemed South Park gallery delves into this artistic odyssey, spotlighting pieces from some of her most cherished series: the Garden, Leopard, and Femme.

“I’m happy to invite you on a solo journey that isn’t so solitary after all,” Norris says. “‘Intricately Intertwined’ is an exhibit where vivid colors dance on canvas. As I stand with each canvas, I realize that the act of creation is a delicate dance of seeing and becoming, intuition leading over each stroke. My artwork is the process of becoming, not just a final product.”

Norris, whose exhibition serves as a culmination of her life's work, approaches this moment as an opportunity to pay tribute to the gallery team at Anne Neilson Fine Art (ANFA). Particularly Founder Anne Neilson and Gallery Director Logan Sutton, and their commitment to fostering enduring connections.

“Their collaboration has not only set a gold standard for gallery operations but has also launched many artists, including renowned painters, onto a global platform,” Norris adds. “ANFA sets an aspirational example for all who believe in the transformative power of art.”

The artist reflects on the five-year journey of collaboration, expressing a deep appreciation for Neilson's gallery as a nurturing environment where artists flourish under her guidance. The gallery, established in 2014, now marks a decade of success and represents over 50 artists worldwide. Norris highlights Sutton's remarkable enthusiasm, support, and managerial prowess, which have fostered an atmosphere where the creative process is revered and honored.

Sutton reciprocates the admiration, expressing, “I appreciate Trudi and her artistic style because it immediately commands attention. Her radiance as a human shines through her work. There is a dreamlike quality, inviting the viewer to explore deeper into the otherworldly realms she creates. The use of whimsical, unexpected imagery creates a sense of wonder and the viewer is left wondering how she comes up with these curious compositions boasting vibrant colors and energy, yet somehow everyone finds a way to resonate with her work. It's a beautiful thing, seeing clients get pulled into the intrigue of her work and speaking on memories that they were clearly transported to. This is what makes art so special. It's magic and truly the soul of humanity.”

Art that resonates with viewers is the cornerstone of ANFA's identity. Aligned with Neilson's vision of establishing a gallery as a beacon of artistic expression in Charlotte and beyond, ANFA remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a welcoming and inspirational environment for all. A decade later, the gallery continues to champion this mission.

“I hope people can enter feeling fully welcome as they are no matter their background, socioeconomic status, or intent to collect,” Sutton says. “Art is for everyone and I'd love to dismantle the notion that galleries are intimidating. After someone's visit, my goal is for a viewer to leave feeling inspired and that they found a place of solace. Art is healing and uplifting; it has the power to change the world.”

For artists aspiring to capture Norris' distinctive approach to her craft, encapsulated in her "mantra," the key lies in embracing the profound challenges and opportunities of the artistic journey.

“Embrace fluidity and trust in your ability to evolve with your artwork,” Norris shares. “Remember, it's a process of becoming, not just a final product. Harness intuition, and like me, allow your instincts to guide your brushstrokes. Art doesn't need a roadmap; sometimes, the best destinations are found off the beaten path. Celebrate vivacity and choose colors that shout, whisper, and converse. The brilliance of bold is that it speaks to the soul. Connect experiences; your travels, your stories, are pigments waiting to stain the canvas. Let them flow!”

Trudi’s solo exhibition “Intricately Intertwined” will be displayed at Anne Neilson Fine Art from April 11 - May 3, but her work will continue on display in the gallery thereafter. Visit anneneilsonfineart.com or email info@anneneilsonfineart.com to learn more.
